Week 1 went well for most part. The first couple of days Hayzel had a hard time settling down for school work in the morning. This may have been because he was allowed to watch tv before school. I quickly implemented the rule of no screen time before all school work was done and it has made a huge difference. It was smooth sailing after that.
LA
His spelling words were ones with the short vowel O sound. He did a pretest on Monday, followed by a few activities, and finally a test on Friday. In grammar he was learning about different types of sentences. He knows a complete sentence includes a subject and a predicate. He has learned that each sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. He learned about the importance of word order. He worked on recognizing sentences that were statements and that those end with a period.
During writing practice, he learned how to describe differences and similarities between 2 or more objects and did several activities to drive the point home.
Math
The math manipulatives I had ordered made it just in time for week 1.
For math this week, Hayzel did a lot of review. A lot of the material was a bit boring for him, so I switched up by asking him to give me the answers in Spanish. Before every math lesson there is something called a morning meeting where the child is asked to review the calendar, a weather graph, counting, and clock work. It is very repetitive especially for a boy who lives on a schedule and knows the day, date, and weather as soon as he opens his eyes in the morning and has been counting and reading a clock since he was 4. So when he complained about how boring it all was, I threw in the Spanish angle and suddenly it wasn’t so boring Every morning he gets to practice the days of the week, months of the year, counting and reading time in Spanish. Win!
Science
In Science prior to week 1, I did an introduction of Science with Hayzel. I taught him what science is and he saw a video on the scientific process. I showed him his science book and explained we would be concentrating on Life Science (biology) this year. We went through a few exercises to show him how he would be using labs and experiments to learn all about life.During week 1 he learned about cells. We read a few books, made a cell mobile, and did a few cell activities using Tania’s Ipad. He also completed two labs. The first consisted of observing a cell (an egg) and identifying the different parts. In the second lab he made 2 cell models (plant and animal) adding a nucleus( strawberry) to both and chloroplast (green grapes) to the plant cell.
