Week 5 Activities

On Monday afternoon, Hayzel and I went to Winnekenni Castle to meet up with friends for a park play session. As soon as Hayzel heard that we where going to a castle he insisted on bringing his toy swords because, hey castles=swords. Naturally. We got to meet some new friends while we where there. Once upon a time, I couldn’t find a single homeschool friend for Hayzel, now it seems we meet a new one every week!

After the castle, we went to the brand new Microsoft store at the mall. They had a workshop/class called TechTots which we decided to give a try.

They started by giving each kid a name tag with stickers and stamps to decorate it with.

It was a nice activity. There was a lot of playing and not enough learning in my opinion. It may have been a little too young for Hayzel, but it’s a nice alternative on a rainy afternoon. Melissa, the coordinator, did say she could work with us to come up with a class that was geared more towards young homeschoolers. So stayed tuned.

Tuesday was Young Explorers day. We’re still working on the human body, and this time the kids learned about the lungs. We met at a local park for this activity even though it was rainy because it had a covered area. This was actually not an ideal place to host a science club, because all the kids wanted to do was go play in the playground. Tania and I did advise our kids ahead of time that because of the rain and wet equipment, they were not allowed to go to the playground, and that kept them reigned in.
Rachel started things off  by showing a video on her Iphone regarding the lungs.

Then the kids did an art project. They painted a set of lungs with sponges so that the pattern left represented the bronchioles.

Finally, the kiddos moms made a model of a lung that demonstrated how the lungs expand during respiration.

This craft called for balloons, so the kids had a blast before, during, and after the meeting playing with them.

Thursday, Hayzel had dance class. The country of the week was Turkey.  Hayzel enjoyed himself and the end of class happily shouted, “ This was fun!”.

Friday during little co-op the kids got to examine some seashells, coral, sea glass, and sand dollars up close.

After leaving co op, I realized how hot the day was. Like, summertime hot. Tania and I (and the kids, of course) quickly changed our plans and met up with Vanessa, Jen, and their brood at the beach. Although the weather was hot, the water was way to cold for even the bravest of the bunch. So there was a lot more sand play than water play. We stayed for about 2.5-3 hours. It was wonderful!
